Monsoon Takes a Backseat: Large Parts of India Face Dry Phase; Rain Deficit Widens

In a surprising turn of events, break-monsoon conditions seem to have firmly established themselves over vast swathes of India, pushing the nation into a dry spell. The overall rain surplus which had stood at a promising note earlier has plummeted to a meager two per cent as the week concluded.

East and North-East India continue to grapple with rain shortages. Notably, Rayalaseema, a region not previously listed among the deficit areas, has now joined the roster. Simultaneously, Kerala’s rain shortfall has intensified.

While hopes were high for some relief from the skies, the forecast does not bode well for regions including North-West India, Central India, West and South India. These parts are predicted to remain parched for at least the upcoming week. On the brighter side, Eastern and North-Eastern territories might experience some respite with potential rains in the forecast.
