Extreme Water Stress Threatens a Quarter of Global Population; Three European Nations at Risk

New research indicates that a quarter of the world’s population faces extreme water stress, with 25 countries using over 80% of their renewable water supply annually for various needs. This leaves them susceptible to droughts and potential water shortages. The World Resources Institute (WRI) reports that top on the list is Bahrain, followed by Cyprus. European nations Belgium and Greece also feature in the list, ranked 18th and 19th respectively. The Middle East and North Africa are the most affected regions, with the demand for water set to increase globally by 20-25% by 2050. Despite the challenges, WRI suggests that global water issues can be affordably addressed with adequate political will, financial backing, and the adoption of efficient water management practices.
