Global Affairs Canada has committed CAD$7.3 million in funding to the Africa Fertilizer Financing Mechanism (AFFM) to support sustainable agricultural productivity and improve livelihoods for smallholder farmers across Africa, with a focus on women and youth.

The funding will enable the AFFM to expand its credit guarantee programs, making it easier for fertilizer importers and aggregators to access financing. Additionally, the support will contribute to improving soil health and providing technical assistance to farmers.

A portion of the funding, CAD$10 million, is earmarked for the AFFM’s ‘Fostering Africa’s agricultural productivity through fertilizer value chain financing’ (FOSTER) program. Through FOSTER, the AFFM aims to increase fertilizer access and use for 800,000 smallholder farmers, boosting yields by 30%.
