Manitoba Announces Funding to Protect Livestock from Predators

The federal and Manitoba governments have jointly announced a $500,000 funding initiative to help livestock producers safeguard their animals from predator attacks. This support comes through the province’s Livestock Predation Prevention Program.

The program offers two funding streams aimed at mitigating predation, which costs Manitoba producers over 2,000 livestock annually.

  • Pre-approved Livestock Predation Prevention Equipment and Guardian Dogs: Provides funding for solar foxlights, electronet fencing, fladry (visual deterrents), and livestock guardian dogs.
  • Predator-Resistant Fence Construction Supports the construction of specialized fencing around sensitive areas like calving grounds, pastures, and deadstock compost sites.

Producers who filed a successful claim under the Manitoba Wildlife Damage Compensation Program since 2021 are eligible to apply. Successful applicants can receive reimbursement of up to 75% of eligible expenses, with maximums of $5,000 for equipment/dogs and $10,000 for fencing.

The Livestock Predation Prevention Program builds upon the successful Livestock Predation Prevention Pilot Project, which saw over 100 projects completed on 48 farms throughout Manitoba.
