Egypt to Utilize $500 Million UAE Wheat Financing Agreement in January

Egypt, one of the world’s largest wheat importers, has announced that it is gearing up to draw from a $500 million financing deal with the United Arab Emirates (UAE) starting January 2024. The agreement is a significant step in ensuring food security and stabilizing the nation’s wheat reserves.

The financing comes as a part of the broader bilateral relations between Egypt and the UAE, which have been strengthening over the past few years. Egypt’s Ministry of Supply revealed that the funds would primarily be used to purchase wheat and support the North African nation’s stockpiling efforts.”Egypt’s reliance on wheat imports is significant due to its vast population and their consumption habits,” stated a senior official from Egypt’s Ministry of Supply. “With this financing deal from the UAE, we can ensure that our citizens have consistent access to essential food products.”It is worth noting that Egypt annually imports around 12 million tons of wheat to meet its domestic consumption needs.
