Water storage levels in India’s major reservoirs have fallen below the average of the last decade. The Central Water Commission revealed in its weekly bulletin that, out of 150 reservoirs monitored, 23 have dipped below 50% of their standard storage capacities. As of August 31, the combined water storage was 113.417 billion cubic metres (BCM), making up only 63% of these reservoirs’ total capacity. For perspective, during the same timeframe in the previous year, the reservoirs held 146.828 BCM of water. Historically, the 10-year average storage sits at 125.117 BCM, indicating a worrying trend for India’s water storage.
