Kverneland’s Pudama, a combined seed and fertiliser sowing mechanism, offers a promising solution to environmental challenges by potentially cutting fertiliser usage in maize sowing by a notable 25%. Independent European research institutions have confirmed this reduction. The precision of Pudama places fertiliser within a 10cm radius of seeds, a departure from the typical continuous application method. New European regulations that increase the space between crop rows could amplify these savings. Although the technology’s benefits currently apply to maize, advancements for cereal crops like wheat and barley are underway. Savings could amount to €3,000 for every 100ha sown based on German fertiliser prices. Arild Gjerde, Kverneland’s Director of Marketing and Sales, emphasized the alignment of agricultural practices with political agendas like the EU Green Deal, underscoring the importance of soil and biodiversity. He emphasized precision and data-driven farming as the way forward.
