Despite facing drought conditions during crucial growing months, Illinois, renowned as the nation’s top producer of canned pumpkins, anticipates a robust pumpkin harvest this season. Farmers like John Ackerman and David Uhlman experienced a mid-season turnaround, attributing late June rains as a pivotal moment that saved and even enhanced the crops, bringing yields to meet, and in some instances exceed, expectations. Notably, the Morton plant of Nestle Libby’s, contributing to around 85% of the nation’s canned pumpkins, utilizes nothing but 100% pumpkin in its canned products, ensuring a genuine pumpkin experience for consumers across the country. Although some varieties struggled with the drought, the widespread sentiment among Illinois farmers is one of gratitude for the recovered crops, ensuring ample supplies of both commercial and ornamental pumpkins across markets and local farms for the fall and holiday seasons.
