Bright Prospects in the Feeder Cattle Market as Spring Approaches

As the feeder cattle market heats up with the arrival of spring, optimism within the industry continues to grow. According to Andrew Griffith, an Extension agricultural economist at the University of Tennessee, the current trends in feeder cattle futures indicate a strong confidence in rising prices. The gap between the March and October feeder cattle contracts, amounting to $20 per hundredweight, suggests an 800 pound steer could see a $160 increase in value by fall. The CME feeder cattle index further supports this positive outlook, showing a significant rise from the beginning of the year and from last December’s low. With prices expected to climb further in the coming months, stakeholders are keenly analyzing the market dynamics and potential for profit in feeder cattle investments, even as feeding margins remain tight.
