Canada Joins the U.S. in Dispute Against Mexico Over Genetically Modified Corn

Canada has expressed concerns over Mexico’s decision to ban genetically modified (GM) corn for human consumption. The Trudeau government has joined a panel led by the United States challenging Mexico’s GM corn ban, claiming the prohibition lacks scientific backing and disrupts North American trade. While Mexico aims to protect native corn and public health against agrochemicals, the ban has stirred international tensions, jeopardizing over $5 billion in grain exports from the U.S. to Mexico annually. Mexico is the leading importer of U.S. corn, relying heavily on GM yellow corn for animal feed. Despite opposition from Canada and the U.S., President López Obrador remains resolute in his stance. Mexico’s Economy Ministry is prepared to defend the nation’s position, asserting its compliance with international trade agreements.
