EU Faces Internal Challenges as It Strives to Enforce Groundbreaking Anti-Deforestation Law

In December 2022, the European Union (EU) took a significant leap in environmental conservation by enacting the EU Regulation on deforestation-free products (EUDR), aimed at combating the global deforestation crisis. This legislation prohibits the sale of certain high-risk commodities, including palm oil, cocoa, beef, and soy, within the EU unless they can be certified as deforestation-free and produced legally. However, despite the global acclaim for this pioneering effort, some EU countries are now seeking to delay its implementation, citing concerns over administrative burdens on the European agricultural sector.
