The European Commission has introduced a comprehensive new strategy aimed at revolutionizing the textiles industry. The initiative seeks to ensure that by 2030, all textile products marketed within the European Union are durable, recyclable, and predominantly made from recycled fibers, aligning with strict environmental and social standards. This strategic move is part of the broader European Green Deal and the Circular Economy Action Plan, addressing the environmental footprint of the textile sector, which is currently the fourth largest in the EU in terms of impact on the environment and climate change. The textile industry is also notable for its significant water use, land use, and contribution to greenhouse gas emissions.Under the new EU Strategy for Sustainable and Circular Textiles, measures will be implemented to combat the culture of fast fashion and reduce textile waste. The strategy outlines plans to eliminate the destruction of unsold textiles and ensure their production respects social rights. Key components of the strategy include the introduction of eco-design requirements for textiles, a Digital Product Passport, and a mandatory EU extended producer responsibility scheme.Furthermore, the strategy aims to reduce the unintentional release of microplastics, ensure the accuracy of green claims, and promote circular business models that include reuse and repair services. To combat the issue of fast fashion, the Commission encourages companies to reduce the number of collections they release each year and to take active steps to minimize their environmental footprints. It also calls on Member States to implement favorable taxation measures for the reuse and repair sector.
