Extreme Weather Variations Threaten Crop Yields, Yet Potential for Good Harvest Remains

Despite a recent wave of extreme heat and dryness that threatens to reduce crop yields, many farms anticipate a fruitful harvest in the coming months due to earlier favorable weather conditions. During a field event on Aug. 22, technical agronomist Lance Tarochione expressed concerns about yield loss from the heat. However, a substantial rainy period from July to mid-August has improved crop potential in Illinois, with some farms receiving up to 18 inches of rain over seven weeks. Although USDA estimates state average yields have decreased for both corn and beans compared to last year, 64% of corn and 65% of soybeans were rated good to excellent as of Aug. 21. While the recent heatwave expedited crop development, cooler conditions are expected later in the month, which may aid crop growth. In northern Illinois, farmers are urged to be cautious of increasing corn rootworm issues, particularly in fields with continuous corn cultivation.
