The Colombian Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, led by Jhenifer Mojica, has rolled out a productive potato management plan set for the next 20 years during the National Potato Council. This strategy aims to benefit about 100,000 farmers and producers involved in this agricultural activity and 250,000 workers across 280 cold-weather municipalities. The plan outlines that the harvested area should not exceed 149,000 hectares, aims to boost productivity from 23.4 tons per hectare to 38.3 tons, and anticipates a production of 5.4 million tons. Another goal is to generate surplus for exports, reaching foreign markets with 698,000 tons, eliminate imports, and increase per capita annual consumption from 55 to 90 kilograms. This plan, designed collaboratively with both public and private stakeholders, addresses the post-harvest phase of potato production and aims to stabilize the market, control price drops, and replace imports.
