Russian Wheat Harvest Surges Ahead, with 37.4 Million MT Gathered, Surpassing 31% Completion

Russian farmers have successfully harvested 31% of the total wheat-planted area, which equates to 37.4 million metric tons (mt) of wheat as of July 31, according to official government data. This progress indicates a significant increase of 12 percentage points from the same date in the previous year.

The area harvested so far spans 9.2 million hectares (ha), with an average yield stable at 4 mt/ha. However, this is approximately 7% lower than last year’s yield at the same point.

The total wheat-planted area in Russia is reported to be 29.3 million ha, which is slightly lower compared to last year due to a decrease in winter wheat plantings to 15.6 million ha. However, spring planting witnessed an increase, with completion on 13.6 million ha, a rise of almost 6% year-on-year.

The barley harvest has also made progress, with an additional 670,000 mt bringing the total harvested amount to 4.35 million mt from 1.2 million ha, an 11% increase compared to the same date in 2022. Although the average yield decreased by 5% to 3.6 mt/ha compared to last week, it’s almost 12% lower year-on-year.

For rapeseeds, 753,400 mt have been harvested on 279,800 ha, a volume almost in line with last year’s pace. The yield, however, improved marginally week-on-week to 2.6 mt/ha, marking a 2% increase year-on-year.

In total, Russia has planted spring crops on 29.9 million ha and winter crops on 17.6 million ha, covering a combined total area of 47.5 million ha. Of this, only 24% or 11.4 million ha of the harvest has been completed.
