Toyota Plants Cultivate Tomatoes and Strawberries to Offset Emissions and Aid Employees

Toyota has started growing cherry tomatoes and strawberries at two of its engine manufacturing plants in Japan as part of its commitment to achieving carbon neutrality by 2035. This innovative approach leverages the heat and CO2 emitted by the facilities to boost plant growth, providing a positive environmental impact and economic benefits. Initiated in April 2022, these on-site greenhouses, assisted by farming expertise, yield 1.5 times more produce than traditional fields. While Toyota engages in various agricultural activities, they have no intent to enter produce markets; instead, the grown crops are freely offered to their employees in cafeterias. The company also aims to support farmers by sharing efficient agricultural techniques.
